TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT - Speedway World Cup 2026
GREAT BRITAIN boss Olly Allen says his side have a huge “challenge” ahead in Germany. The national side face the host nation, Ukraine and Czech Republic in the Speedway World Cup Semi-Final 1 in Landshut on Friday night.
Allen has faced an injury crisis ahead of the event with both squad members Charles Wright and Adam Ellis ruled out. The latter after crashing in Poland on Sunday afternoon. That means the final team line-up is captain Robert Lambert, Dan Bewley, Tom Brennan, Leon Flint and reserve William Cairns.
Allen said: “It hasn’t been the ideal preparation and firstly we are naturally disappointed for Adam that he misses out after another incident. We wish him and Charles both quick recoveries.
“I have picked the best team that is available to me. That means great opportunities for Leon being promoted into the main team and also Will at reserve.
“We face a big challenge in Landshut. I believe all three of our opponents will be very good on that track. It’s going to be a very difficult event to win and reach the World Cup final later this year.
“Leon is well prepared for the occasion. He races for Landshut and knows the track very well. He’s been excellent so for this season for his club in the Polish league and we are confident that he can do the job required.
“Will comes in at reserve after the late injury to Adam. We all know how much ability he has and this experience of the big occasion will be excellent for him. If he is called upon, we know he’ll give it everything.”
Allen knows that his top three have to deliver if they are to progress. He added: “Robert and Dan are a brilliant spearhead for us and they are determined to succeed in the World Cup after coming so close three years ago in Wroclaw.
“Tom has been fantastic so far this season and this is another chance for him to elevate his performances on the world stage.”
